- How did you work to remix easy tiger, the B-side of the
first sngle of Depeche mode new album?
I
had to hurry because I was on tour with A.S Dragon and there
was only one day in which I could do that remix. As the
original version was an instrumental, I found interesting
to do a kind of cover instead of doing a typical remix,
even more that the material at our disposition in our studio
didn't allow us to synchronise the original tracks. I recorded
then the bass, the guitar, the drums and the orgue all at
the same time and added after some overdubs of electronic
piano , fuzz orgue , electronic drums and choirs. All was
done in one day . What I wanted to achieve was to give the
feeling that this version of Martin
Gore 's composition
was done before the Depeche Mode version , which is more
synthetic.
MN :-
You've been contacted again for Freelove, the third single,
did you work the same way as you did for Easy tiger ?
Not
a all . I copied the voice of Dave Gahan and tried on a
subtle way to change the harmonic pattern , playing more
on the colors . I did a rough mix which didn't satisfy me
; Some days later I wanted to finish my track and my numeric
multitrack (a horrible DR 16 Akai that I woudln't adive
to anyone) crashed , deleting at the same time everything
I've done ;I was really disasppointed , I think I couldn't
do it anymore, that i couldn't start it all over again .
Then I decided to copy the instrumental rough mix , added
some more effects , added the voice on it so finally the
result was really close to what i wanted to do something
quite solar and aquatic at the same time. I'm very happy
about the end, I would have loved the whole track to be
on the same way but I was too depressed to start it all
over again (with the risk of my hard drive crashing again
...).

- What do you think about the Exciter tour ?
The
last time I saw Depeche Mode, it was at the same season
in Bercy , eleven years ago and I was very impressed; I
was afraid that a few years after the magic would have been
gone, but finally that was totally the opposite that happened
; I found that the band progressed a lot and they never
have been as good as they are now ,it's so rare that a band
after 20 years isn't on their lowest period, but instead
at their best ... The other aspect that did surprise me
was the passion among the audience but also how different
it could be also ,I didn't have the feeling it was a meeting
of nostalgic people in their thirties , but this band gathers
people from very different generations it's really wonderfull
; During the concert I was waiting for "never let me down",
when they played it at the end , you could even cry ,this
song and "enjoy the silence" were really beautifull . I
also found that all recent songs were really good in live.

- You've already remixed 2 songs from DM, you are appreciated
by both the band and the fans so could Bertrand Burgalat
produce a DM album if he was asked to ?
I
think that if it would happen to me it would mean that I've
been at the extrem limits of my dreams about music ,after
that I would have to retreat and open a bar , as rugbymen
do ; If you could push them to let me produce you , I would
be eternally gratefull to you !!
